“It will make me a whole woman again; it gives me back what was taken from me.” After an operation lasting less than half an hour, 30-year-old Stéphanie has a clitoris again.
In Burkina Faso, 70 percent of girls are genitally mutilated. This has myriad, far-reaching consequences, including affecting sexual pleasure in later life.
An increasing number of women are opting to undergo surgery to repair the damage caused by the earlier mutilation, however, with a price tag of €120, it’s an option that only the rich can pursue.
Dutch journalist Femke van Zeijl accompanied Stéphanie on the day of the operation; Stéphanie was nervous but determined.

I am happy that you had the opportunity to have this surgery done. However, I am sad that this had to happen to you at all. I do not believe in such traditiions done to women in Africa.I salute you for taking a stand.
