A passion for barrel organs

Published on : 16 September 2009 - 12:45pm | By Marijke van den Berg
More about:

There are fewer barrel organs to be seen on Dutch streets nowadays. Mind you, there are still quite a few around. Lovingly taken care of by volunteers, the Netherlands’ 20 most beautiful barrel organs were to be seen last Saturday in Amsterdam’s Dam Square. A treat for eye and ear!

There are enough barrel organ enthusiasts around. People such as Adrie Vergeer are passionate about them. He was just a child when he came across the Lekkerkerker barrel organ in the street. It was love at first sight. He is now the proud owner of the organ which, since 1991, has been included in the Netherlands Cultural Monuments Collection.
