One year on: cause of Libyan air crash still uncertain

Published on : 12 May 2011 - 1:04pm | By RNW News Desk (Photo (c) RNW)
More about:

A year ago, an Afriqiyah Airways flight from Johannesburg to Libya crashed just before it was due to land in the capital Tripoli. Seventy Dutch passengers lost their lives.

The investigation into the disaster has ground to a halt due to the war in Libya. But relatives of the victims are finding it difficult to accept that the cause of the crash has still not been finally determined. The family of Joëlle van Noppen is just one of those affected.

Joëlle van Noppen was formerly in the girl band Wow, but they failed to make the breakthrough. She got a job in administration, married and had a daughter. At the end of April last year, Joëlle flew to South Africa to visit her best friend. She never made it home.

The official Libyan explanation for the crash is that the pilot had a heart attack. But one Libyan researcher involved in the investigation thinks that's unlikely.
