Gwang Il Jung was imprisoned for three years in Yodok, a detention camp for political prisoners in North Korea. He was convicted of spying for South Korea. The former businessman says he had no choice but to give a false confession after undergoing ten months of torture.
When he was released from Yodok, his home and family had vanished. He decided to flee North Korea and eventually ended up in South Korea in 2004. There he heads an organisation that works to put an end to the secret prison camps. To this day, an estimated 600,000 people are detained in North Korean prison camps.
