Noah's Ark is almost ready

Published on : 1 June 2011 - 10:28am | By Bas Teunissen (Photo: RNW)
More about:

Dutch builder and evangelist Johan Huibers has nearly finished a full-size version of Noah’s Ark. The boat is 130 metres long, 30 metres wide and 23 metres high. The same as the measurements given in the Old Testament.

At the moment the Ark is populated by a number of life-size models of animals, including elephants and giraffes, since Noah supposedly brought two of every species on board. There is also an exhibition about the Biblical flood. Not because Johan Huibers is expecting the world to be destroyed by another flood any time soon, but in order, he says, to “bring the Bible story closer to people”.

You can go on board the Ark for a couple of euros, but it was financed mainly by the sale of a previous smaller version that Huibers built and by a bank loan. “It’s as if it had to happen. Every time there was a problem, a solution came along. “

Next year the Ark will be sailing across the North Sea to London in time for the Olympic Games. “And after that, Marseilles, Istanbul and Beirut maybe... who knows?”

Hello I'm new to here...
Glad to see all!

Anon 3 June 2011 - 1:59am / U.S.A.

A stunning accomplishment, beautifully executed. I hate to bring this up but --- To service all those animals Noah would have needed to carry along tons of feed of different kinds and would need unending bales of straw to soak up the oceans of urine, and mountains of manure. They'd have to be constantly cleaning up and tossing dirties out the windows. And with so few windows, think of the stench. Sorry.

Hiram1 3 June 2011 - 3:34am

If the Creator can put all the creatures on the boat, don't you think he could take care the trival things like eating and cleaning? Why would the stench bother Noah, his family, and the animals? They were used to the stench of mankind and I am sure the stench from inside the ship was like perfume in comparison to the stench of man.

Anonymous 9 June 2011 - 8:14pm

Trivial things like eating... If it's so trivial, then why are so many poor starving to death? Use that brain that I assume is in that head of yours.

Yijiang Wang 2 June 2011 - 2:22am / Xi'an China/Toronto Canada

It's self-rescue plan, very good idea.

If we believe in Noah's ark story then we all must be incest, including the animals.

Richard DeVries 2 June 2011 - 2:22am / USA

Of course we are all of one family and one race. Prohibitions against marrying close relatives did not exist until much later. Many early Bible characters married cousins, or close relatives, and in the case of Adam and Eve's children, brothers and sisters married with God's blessing.

Anon 3 June 2011 - 1:50am / U.S.A.

First cousin marriages are still extremely common in the Middle East, among Muslims. In fact, sometimes uncles marry nieces. It's a relic of the tribal customs.

Wow! Infact the Hindu scriptures also have Manu, aka Nu in other cultures, who was asked to do the same important task of saving the life on earth during the deluge.Perhaps Manu, Nu or Noah are the names of the same person..

Not 'supposedly'.

JW 1 June 2011 - 3:43pm / NL

It may have been written 'supposedly' because the Bible, Torah, and Koran are works of fiction, and are not meant to be taken literally.

Hiram1 2 June 2011 - 10:40pm

Now, Now, JW! How did you come to conclusion that the Bible, Torah, and Koran are fiction? In the case of the "Noah and the flood" (after thousands of years and as it is told today)I have to agree with you. It is difficult to believe that Noah put all of those creatures on the boat; but, then who am I to say it didn't happen as the story said it did. I wasn't there and I don't think you were there. JW, I do agree with you as difficult as that was for me to say.

Richard DeVries 2 June 2011 - 2:29am / USA

In fact the Bible is history with actual dates associated with everything from Genesis 12 with Abraham and following. And Genesis 1-11 can be trusted because "it all fits together" in establishing world history. Oh people, the Word of God is so miraculous, it is as someone has said: "A book that man could not write if would, and would not write if he could." Trust it for life here and eternity hereafter. Look up also AnswersinGenesis.org and CreationMuseum.org for more real answers.

I feel so sorry for your children! Born into such bullshit!

Anonymous 23 June 2011 - 9:58pm

Feel sorry for your own children, by judging someone like this.
We can all have our own theories to hang on. We only need to respect and love.
