Nigerian student dreams of Dutch cheese

Published on : 25 August 2010 - 3:08pm | By Eric Beauchemin (photo: RNW)
More about:

As the academic year gets under way over the next few weeks, foreign students will be arriving in the Netherlands to take up places at Dutch universities and colleges. Radio Netherlands Worldwide follows six of them as get to know their new home.

"I jumped in the air when I saw my student flat," says 22-year-old Taiwo Fawumi from Nigeria. He's been in Delft for just 24 hours and is still in seventh heaven.

He'll be spending the next two years studying at Delft University of Technology, thanks to a scholarship from the IDEA League, a network of five of Europe's leading science and technology universities.

He's always loved cheese. When he was young, his mother told him he should go to the Netherlands because that's where cheese came from. Now that he's here, he says he wants "to eat it every day".

This story so makes me smile!
I too love cheese and am ecstatic when I visit my homeland, The Netherlands!

It is wonderful that someone gets a scholarship and is appreciative and excited.
He will surely succeed

and drag a big wheel (of kaas) home on vacation or after his studies are completed!

Best of luck to you!

Cheese, yes cheese, milk's leap toward immortality.

Anonymous 27 August 2010 - 12:03am / USA

What a wonderful story! All of my personal hopes and dreams have to do with cheese, too!

Won't be long before the whole family joins him in the Netherlands.

Anonymous 27 August 2010 - 9:00am

Don't be so quick to assume that everyone wants to live in a "developed country." The "third world" has much to offer as well and I'm sure he must have left many things behind in Nigeria that he will miss. It may just be that he wants a good education so that he can contribute in a meaningful way to the furture of his own country.

Hiram2 27 August 2010 - 3:12am

The cheese is excellent in the Netherlands and I can see why his family would want to join him in the Netherlands. I hope he enjoys the Netherlands and respects the Dutch culture. Good luck!

Okunoye Adedamola 10 July 2011 - 11:45am

Am sure he is not missing anything here in Nigeria

jasmin 26 August 2010 - 12:08pm / India

Good to know that dreams do come true!!
