Muslim man is runner-up for Mr. Gay Netherlands

Published on : 1 November 2012 - 9:20am | By Margo de Haas (Screenshot: RNW)
More about:

Kevin Abdoelkariem has Surinamese-Hindustani roots. He's of Muslim origin and he's gay. Kevin decided to take part in the Mr. Gay Awards because he wanted to be a role model for other young men who are struggling with their sexual identity.

Even though Kevin is Muslim, his immediate family supported him when he came out. But Kevin knows all too well that homosexuality and religion don't always go hand in hand. "My immediate family didn't have problems with it, but I have relatives who would never accept it", he says.

One of the finalists in the Mr. Gay Awards had to withdraw at the last moment because he received threats from his Muslim family.

Kevin hopes that by talking about homosexuality and approaching it in a positive manner, he will be able to help other young people who are struggling with their feelings. Kevin came in third place in the Mr. Gay Awards.

It's highly likely that many would like to "get his ass", as I'm sure there are plenty of them are also gay. Don't be so naive to think otherwise.

The world needs more role models like this young man to stand up for themselves and for others who cannot. Bravo to him and his (immediate) family!
