Microcredit for an ex-convict

Published on : 1 February 2010 - 9:00am | By Junito Drias (RNW)
More about:

Microcredit is meant for people who otherwise have difficulty getting a loan. Former prisoner Raymond Wuisan is just such a person; he wanted to set up a SIM card company in Jakarta, but official organisations had no confidence in him.

Microcredit organisations also take a good look at the background of applicants. So ex-convicts don’t have much of a chance. That is why Raymond Wuisan went looking elsewhere for financial backing. He ended up finding someone who was willing to lend him money privately - informal microcredit is a well-known phenomenon in Indonesia. Now he supplies women with SIM cards who then sell them in the Indonesian capital.

This video portrait is part of a series about small businesses that have received microcredit. The eight reports have been produced for Radio Netherlands Worldwide’s series “Microfinance – who profits?” that was launched on 25 January 2010 at a conference at the Peace Palace in The Hague.
