Mega pig farms: dream or nightmare?

Published on : 9 January 2010 - 10:00am | By Sigrid Deters
More about:

It’s the worst nightmare of Sonja Borsboom, spokeswoman for the citizens’ initiative against mega pig farms (called Megastallen Nee in Dutch). But it’s the dream – and indeed the fervent ambition – of pig farmer Bert Rijnen: a piggery containing over 10,000 animals. A mega pig farm. They meet each other in a pigsty, which holds around 400 animals. But the farmer is convinced that an operation on this scale is hopelessly outdated.

Several Dutch Pig Farmers started large operations in the US. Unfortunately many of these farmers went under as market prices fell. I agree with the writer/journalist that farms with that many pigs are unnecessary and to big. There are a number of other benefits to keeping farms somewhat smaller as well as avoiding situations that make smaller farms much less profitable in favor of corporate style large farms. Many other methods of farming have been introduced for other types of animals which threaten small farm activities and reduce farming to a science and favor large corporate farms over traditional family farms. Large corporations such as McDonalds benefit readily from concepts that rely on cheap labor and corporate ownership, but ultimately they devalue the human element and animal rights.

Why not interview people who live in the vecinity of mega pig farms! So many animals in such confined spaces just has to lead to disease - animal and human. And disposing of all that excrement at once...ever thought of this?
