The Mayor of Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb, says Liberation Day riots in Rotterdam on Tuesday evening were probably planned as sticks bearing nails were found at the scene. He also called on eye-witnesses to go to the police. The mayor has launched an investigation into the rioting that prompted police to fire warning shots. The festivities in Rotterdam's city centre ended abruptly when police broke up disturbances.
As the evening progressed, the atmosphere became increasingly tense, and fights broke out when two groups of youths clashed. The police intervened, but became the target of aggression themselves.
The officers were cornered and pelted with bottles. The degree of threat was such that they fired warning shots into the air. At this, the organisers immediately brought the party to an end. No arrests were made.
