Killing birds for flight safety at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport

Published on : 30 November 2011 - 11:31am | By Eric Beauchemin (Photo: ANP)
More about:

The Dutch authorities have announced that they are going to take harsh measures to curb the bird population in and around Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport - in order to improve flight safety. These measures include killing and gassing birds.

The announcement follows the release of a report by the Dutch Safety Board into the emergency landing in June last year of a Royal Air Maroc plane after it was hit by a flock of geese. In recent months, the number of incidents involving bird collisions at Schiphol has been increasing.

The government needs to receive permission from the Lower House of parliament to place the interests of human beings above those of animals. It also has to get permission from Brussels to use CO2 to gas the birds.

I agree with using hunting dogs instead of just shooting the birds down or gassing them, as it is more humane and better for the ecosystem that way. Drastic measures should be avoided. Sherwin

Has anyone considered using hunting dogs to drive the birds away from the open grassy areas? Many of these areas already have fences and radio fences can easily be kept far enough back from the edge of the runways to prevent interference (these types of fences only have a range of 2 to 3 feet) and allowing the dogs to keep the birds away.
