The city of The Hague has long been known as the seat of international justice. The International Court of Justice began work in the Peace Palace in 1946. It's the United Nations' main legal body and rules on conflicts between states.
In recent years, more international courts have been set up in The Hague, such as the International Criminal Court. It deals with individual cases, involving serious crimes such as crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide.
Both courts are becoming busier and busier, as confidence in the international justice system grows.
