"I thought they were going to kill me"

More about:

Singer Mahely Ba was deeply traumatised when she returned to her home country, Ivory Coast, to shoot a video clip and civil war broke out.

Following the 2010 elections, both President Laurent Gbagbo, and his rival, Alassane Ouattara claimed victory. Gbagbo refused to step down. A four-month war ensued, resulting in over 3,000 deaths on both sides.

After intervention by the French Army, Ouattara was installed as president. Gbagbo was arrested and brought to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, where he now awaits a possible trial.

In this video, we see Ba in The Hague. In February, she traveled from Paris to join other Gbagbo supporters in a demonstration outside the ICC. “Where is justice?” she asks herself.

This video is part of the Africa Desk’s newly launched French-language platform to discuss the case of Laurent Gbagbo. The former president of the Ivory Coast is being charged for crimes against humanity in the aftermath of his country’s 2010 elections.
