Every Thursday afternoon, 25 grannies get together in Rotterdam to knit sweaters, scarves and caps devised by young Dutch designers.
Niek van Hengel came up with the idea when he visited his grandfather in a nursing home. He saw a lady knitting, but she didn’t know what or for whom she was knitting. That’s how the idea for the brand name “Granny’s Finest” was born. Every week, young designers and grannies get together in a room in Laurens, a nursing home in Rotterdam. In exchange for a cup of tea, a piece of cake and some company, they discuss designs and knit.
The elderly ladies include a hand-written message with their products. They’re now receiving fan mail from all over the world.

How wonderful for the designers and Oma's alike! I find knitting fun and meditative. There are more and more knitters coming out of the knitting-closet here in the US, I'm so glad that is also true in the Netherlands which is one of my favorite places in the world.
My only question is where can we get some of those fabulous Oma knits??
So innovative, lovely and touching...good to see that senior citizens being valued for their talent and wisdom...and not as a liability in an institute..I can feel the joy and pride in the grannies..just love this concept..
