Healthy workers are less expensive

Published on : 4 April 2010 - 3:33pm | By Zainab Hammoud (RNW Photo)
More about:

Dutch companies spend a lot of attention on their employees' health because they must pay for their sick leave when they become ill.

Among the tactics companies use to keep their employees healthy is to reimburse some of the costs of gym membership and ensure that company restaurants offer healthy meals.

Professor of company and sports medicine at Amsterdam's Free University, Willem van Mechelen says only employees who are already leading a healthy lifestyle profit from these measures. He says much more is needed to stimulate personnel with an unhealthy lifestyle. Firms should approach employees on a personal level and also make an effort to change the working environment. This would stimulate employees to lead a more healthy lifestyle.

The flower company Flora Holland - a firm with a good health policy - does not want to go too far since health is seen as a private affair. The company has chosen a compromise and has its own approach as far as healthy living is concerned.

In Italy big public companies dont pay much attention to those really important issues therefore there is quite a lot of people who stay at home even when its not necessary because they feel their companies dont pay attention to them, nor let them attend professional courses or advanced career opportunities.
I admire the improvement steps in social care issues that your country take and I wish I was born there

Mental wellness is far more urgent than physical fit in today's economy, society, and so on. Another global trend must be that healthy people should start talking with unhealthy people; nationals who are rich in love but poor in sex should companion with those who are just the opposite. In Toronto I felt that less mentally healthy people won't speak up with healthy people easily; or, people sometimes see each other sick. I always demand healthy mental state regarding friendship, sadly I am too hard on myself and realize mental wellness becomes a luxury.

Workplace is one best occasion to exchange wellness of mind and body. Many people who are healthy mind are also not fat and with low income. Many white collar office employees who are both fat and mentally unwell with high salaries should start working on physical tasks which are low pace and less tension. Many who are good mentality but thin body should be hired for positions which require long hours' sitting.
