Dutch Moroccan and Jewish youths are working together to help restore one of Europe’s biggest Jewish graveyards. The cemetery in the Amsterdam neighbhourhood of Zeeburg was founded nearly three centuries ago, but it fell into disrepair after World War II, which nearly wiped out Holland’s Jewish community. Many of the 200,000 gravestones are hidden among weeds, bushes and trees.
Earlier this month, young Jewish and Dutch Moroccan people decided to do their bit to help clean up the cemetery. They’re giving up their Sundays for four weeks in a row to clear the first few dozen metres of the graveyard.
Even though there are frequent attempts to reconcile the Jewish and Moroccan communities, there continue to be problems between the two groups. They decided to begin this project after a Moroccan youth made a Nazi salute when he saw a rabbi.
