The gigantic penis plant blooms

Published on : 2 July 2009 - 5:14pm | By RNW English section
More about:

They're very proud of their Amorphophallus Titanium plants down at the Hortus Botanicus botanical gardens in the Dutch university town of Leiden. As one of the botanists there explains, the plant that has just flowered in the hothouse is a little bit like an 'own child' to him and his colleagues, for it is the product of 11 years' nurturing.

From berries to full-blown 'monsters', these 'penis plants' give off an awful smell when they come into bloom.

Junito Drias from Radio Netherlands Worldwide's Indonesian service took a camera and set off to Leiden to find out more...

Please note, the amorphallus titanium at the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden is no longer in bloom.

Well spotted, sir. We are running some of our most successful videos again - in the Recommended section on the RNW homepage - during the summer months up here in the Northern Hemisphere.

I'm glad I'm watching it rather than smelling it.
