German students turning to Dutch language

Published on : 24 August 2011 - 12:39pm | By Eric Beauchemin (Screenshot: NOS)
More about:

The Dutch language is becoming increasingly popular among students in neighbouring Germany. There are currently 30,000 Germans who are studying Dutch, twice as many as a decade ago.

Most students say they're learning the language in order to be able to study or work in the Netherlands. As a result of the rising popularity of Dutch, some cities in Germany are now actively recruiting teachers in the Netherlands.

On the other hand, because fewer and fewer Dutch students are studying German, the German embassy and the Goethe Institute are about to launch a campaign to promote the language in the Netherlands.
