Freedom Party wants ban on minarets

Published on : 25 October 2011 - 11:25am | By Margo de Haas (Screenshot: Netwerk )
More about:

Geert Wilders' Freedom Party is calling for a referendum on banning the construction of new minarets. According to the party, minarets symbolise Islam's domination over Christianity.

The Qu'ran doesn't mention minarets, so the Freedom Party argues that banning them does not violate freedom of religion. The Council of State, the highest legal body in the Netherlands, is now studying the proposal.

I do not think allowing Muslims to build Mosque minarets should be such an issue because like churches and cathedrals a mosque is a symbolic architectural building which does not prove Islam domination over Christianity. Both Christianity and Islam preach tolerance, peaceful resolutions and the love for God. Let us all work for peace, do not assume that Islam is fighting against Christianity. The Media is focusing on people who used religion in order to wage war and terrorism. Please differentiate between Bin Laden and the conflict between Palestinians against Israel. Fighting for your freedom and for peace is a human right. Terrorism is banned in both Christianity and in Islam. Remember Mosques are also considered a work of art and everyone is invited to learn about Islam because in essence Christianity or Islamic faith have so much in common and both praise God or Allah. Thanks.

The looping rationalisation from the PVV is bizarre. They claim Islam isn't a religion but then say that banning minarets isn't an encroachment on religious freedom because they're not mentioned in the Quran. If the Quran is simply ideological literature, why are they holding it up as something religious?
Long story short, the PVV are ticking off yet another item on the list of populist proposals, and getting themselves on the news again. Big deal.
Islam, like all other religions in the country, is on the decline. Fifty years from now, these mosques will stand as empty as all the churches do now. Banning minarets would only serve to create a greater division of society in the interim.

You appear oblivious to reality. There are already critical masses of Muslims in European countries. These urban areas are developing into parallel societies. Ethnic cultures coupled with their brand of Islam are increasingly disconnected from the societies they exist in. 50 years from now these areas will have become even larger due to high birth rates and continued marriage related immigration.

My reality is based on statistics, not fear. Decline in mosque attending population: http://www.cbs.nl/en-GB/menu/themas/vrije-tijd-cultuur/publicaties/artik...
Combine that with falling birth rates for Muslim women and we realise that this 'Eurabia' talk is pure paranoid fantasy. If parts of society become isolated and insular, it's not because we're acting too welcoming. It's because we're acting like assholes towards them.

For decades governments in Western Europe have been extremely welcoming to third world immigrants by spending billions in social aid, language aids, special education, housing subsidies, cultural awareness programs, religious and social club subsidies and the list goes on without end. What return on investment did it yield: nothing: money lost that should have gone to education, technology and infrastructure.

PeterNY 27 October 2011 - 7:02pm / USA

Also, many third world immigrants disqualify themselves from Western Society by refusing education, integration in general and by opposing embracing human rights. Very often they also have cultural traits that clearly clash with Western cultures in day to day acceptable behavior.

You are entitled to your opinion. From my perspective and in my opinion third world immigrants, and those happen to be Muslims in most cases unfortunately, are a ticking time bomb that will cause many more problems in the near and medium future. You should not focus exclusively on NL, look at it from an EU perspective. Whether or not someone attends a mosque or plays soccer has nothing to do with contribution to GDP and/or (in)stability of society.

PeterNY 26 October 2011 - 11:44pm / USA

Good idea. Wherever Islam gains a foothold other religions and ways of life disappear. Ask the Assyrians, Greeks of Anatolia, Armenian, Zoroastrians of Persia, South Sudanese and the list goes on and on and on.

PeterNY 26 October 2011 - 11:47pm / USA

And more recently of course the Coptic people of Egypt, Maronite & Nestorian Christians in Lebanon, Assyrians in Iraq, Palestinian Christians and other non-islamic minorities across the Middle East.

Anonymous 27 October 2011 - 4:08am / Lebanon

Have you ever been to Lebanon. Can you give an example of where/ when christians have been persecuted or are you just throwing things in. Lebanon's christian population is 28% yet constitutionally the president must be a maronite christian and parliament must be 50% christian of all denominations, the other 50% is divided between muslims and druze. THere is social code of respect and no one dare cross that from any side. In Jordan christians families and tribes have a direct line with the monarch and are the economic elite. And guess what Muslims dont complain. Oh and have you read the Omarid code of Jerusalem by the caliphe, Omar stating full respect and tolerance towards christians to practice their religion and bear their crosses. Palestinian christians ( what is left of them ) have a greater threat believe you me. but what the hell lets just create scenarios because we enjoy the mob mentality!!!

PeterNY 27 October 2011 - 3:00pm / USA

Christians are second class citizens by Islamic scripture. They have to pay taxes and are granted only minimal rights. Today Palestinian Christians are 4% of the Palestinian population, this used to be more than 8% in the 1940s. In the 1920s Lebanese Christians made up circa 80% of the Lebanese population, today it is down to 39%. In Iraq Christians are heavily targeted by extremists. Today by estimation 0.4% of Iranians are Christians, in the 1970s this was around 1.5%. And the list goes on and on.

This should have been proposed 20 years ago. This is The Netherlands, not some caliphate. If you don't like it, move back.

Willingly I accept. The theme is interesting, I will take part in discussion. Together we can come to a right answer.

You do not seem to realize that the left is self destructing. Once Islam takes over there will be no room left for liberalism and freedom.

Anonymous 30 October 2011 - 3:16am

As if that is the case with our current cabinet anyways???? VVD is the only "liberal" party of the bunch and they seem to have dropped all their liberal ideals to focus on immigration and public safety: how liberal...
