Former professional football players Nordin Wooter and Kiki Musampa have taken over a bankrupt amateur club in Amsterdam North. The former Ajax players want the club, FC New Amsterdam, to become a second home for the neighbourhood youngsters.
“When I played football on a professional level, I was primarily preoccupied with myself,” says Kiki Musampa, the youth chairman of FC New Amsterdam. “It’s now time for me to do things for others.”
Musampa, who played for Ajax, Manchester City and Atlético Madrid, says his father is a role model for him. Raphaël Musampa was the co-founder of the UDPS opposition party in Congo and fled in the early ‘80s to the Netherlands. He has since returned to his country and is hoping to be elected to the Congolese parliament. “My father has spent his entire life doing things for others,” says Musampa. “I want to do the same thing through football”.
Musampa and Wooter want FC New Amsterdam to welcome everyone, “even those who aren’t members of the club. It’s better for young people to join a football club than to hang out on the street.”
