Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands has ended a 10-day visit to the former Netherlands Antilles. It was the first visit by the Dutch monarch - accompanied by heir apparent Prince Willem-Alexander and his wife Máxima - to the former Netherlands Antilles since the mutual relationships between these five islands - and with the Netherlands in Europe and the island of Aruba - within the framework of the larger Kingdom of the Netherlands was altered last year.
The Dutch royal family received a warm welcome on all the islands, but there were also protests against, among other things, the increase in prices since the introduction of the US dollar as the official currency on some of the islands.
The visit ended on the smallest island, Saba. This will most likely be Queen Beatrix's last visit to the Antilles as queen. Next time, the inhabitants will probably be visited by King Willem-Alexander.
