Dutch police look to expand spying powers

Published on : 27 December 2011 - 1:22pm | By Davion Ford (Photo: RNW)
More about:

Netherlands Justice Minister Ivo Opstelten wants to give the police more authority to use electronic surveillance techniques, such as tapping into the mobile phones and personal computers of suspects.

But lawyers, internet specialists and politicians are concerned that the new plan will give police unwarranted powers to invade people's privacy.

Discussion

Anonymous 28 December 2011 - 9:09am / Croatia

Police and so-called "security" forces should have no rights to invade people's privacy. The state already has too much power to invade human and civil rights. These should be severely curtailed, not expanded!

Vera Gottlieb 27 December 2011 - 7:11pm / Germany

I guess the American 'spy bug' is catchy.
