One of Holland's best-loved figures, Sinterklaas, took to the water yesterday to visit an island in the east of the country. But on the return voyage, his little boat overturned and Sinterklaas and his helpers had to be rescued.
Sinterklaas is a centuries-old tradition. Each year in November, the Dutch equivalent of Santa Claus arrives from Spain on a steamer and spends three weeks in the Netherlands. The climax to his visit is 5 December, when he gives the children their presents.
When visiting children up and down the country, Sinterklaas likes to use unusual modes of transport. Traditionally he is supposed to arrive on horseback, but these days he’s just as likely to turn up on public transport, a bicycle or in a mini cab with his bishop’s mitre sticking out of the window.
So it’s not at all out of character for the old man take to the water in an under-sized boat on a cold winter’s day. A photo of him and his helpers capsizing would certainly make a lovely entry for one of the many Sinterklaas photo competitions.

Glad that Sinterklaas was rescued and is fine.Wonder what is so lovely about an 'old man' in the cold sea!!!
