Dutch exports: tulips, cheese and ... dance

Published on : 29 January 2012 - 2:01am | By RNW News Desk (Photo: RNW)
More about:

Dutch dance music has conquered the world. DJs like Armin van Buuren, Tiësto and Afrojack are exporting their music to the remotest corners of the world.

by Daan Roelofs

The value of those exports is considerable, according to the latest figures of Dutch copyright organisation Buma/Stemra, which says that in the last two years it has doubled to nearly 50 million euros.

The Netherlands' music exports totalled some 81.5 million euros in 2010. Classical and alternative music had a fair share in this result, but the mainstay was brought by the electronic dance music setting huge crowds in motion. Let's dance!

I don't see any Dutch artist to promote. It's about de Dutch DJ! Of course we have our Dutch artists, but in general the Dutch 'stapper' is very much international (English) orientated.

Dance music is so generic, every song sounds the same. Its music for robots without a heart / soul.

To put it another way, how is this 'Dutch'? I see Coca Cola advertising in the background. I see English signs and titles and hear English being sung. It's great that the Dutch have yet another popular product to export and I KNOW that the tulips were not originally Dutch; the cheese doesn't come from Gouda itself. Please explain how this is Dutch. Again, I admit that, I have not kept up with pop music trends (Even though, right now, my son is performing at Bondi Beach) but how is it that these Dutch musicians have the knack to make this English-sounding dance music popular?

Export is export.

COOL.... I think Dutch have more than Just Cool DJ Dance, you can see that when you visit the country regulally and more and more meet with people. I guess gradully DJ Music is become and international lable more than a dancing show, its well recognized among the youth even elders- when you think of going-outside Holland ,do considered the Gulf market, Oman is just small as the Netherlands, but I think a GCC tour will do better.
