Dangerous nuclear materials like enriched uranium or cobalt often fail to be spotted by customs in Rotterdam harbour. The hazardous stuff simply remains hidden in the thousands of containers full of scrap metal.
Only the more refined detection methods used by commercial scrap traders prevent the materials from entering the market. Dutch customs are well aware of the problem, but say they simply lack the means and capacity to change the situation. But scrap traders feel it's not their responsibility to serve as a safety net
