Despair growing in Dutch refugee centres

Published on : 4 August 2011 - 12:20pm | By Eric Beauchemin (Screenshot: Uitgesproken)
More about:

On Wednesday, an African asylum-seeker tried to commit suicide in a refugee centre in the south of the Netherlands. He suffered serious burns and has been taken to a hospital over the border in Germany.

The suicide attempt was the latest in a string of events involving asylum-seekers who often have to wait for years before the authorities decide whether or not they'll be given refugee status.

Rasul, a 21-year-old Afghan, was one of those desperate asylum-seekers. On May 8, 2011, he drowned himself.
