Cycling in no man's land

Published on : 5 September 2009 - 8:00am | By Marijke van den Berg
More about:

The Netherlands is famous for its beautiful, clear light, especially along its coastlines. Many people love the quality of the light that's sometimes created by the dark, threatening clouds. The 17th and 18th-century Dutch Masters painted the light and the sky extensively.

The Maasvlakte is an industrial area connected to the Port of Rotterdam and was created in the 1960s by reclaiming land from the North Sea. It is now possible to cycle through this 'no man's land' and enjoy the light and the sky, even though you usually have to battle a fierce wind too.
