Skating fever has not only gripped the Dutch, their Flemish neighbours to the south have also been touched. Many canals in Belgium are frozen and skaters are flocking to the ice there too. But one canal, the Damme near Bruges, is still off-limits.
This skating stretch, the most popular in Flanders, is an oddity because it passes from Belgian territory into the Dutch province of Zeeland. But the ice thickness is below the safe minimum of 11cm, so crossing the border is out - for now.
