China speaks loudly and carries a big stick

Published on : 5 February 2010 - 2:47pm | By Thijs Westerbeek van Eerten (Flickr/RNW)
More about:

China has suddenly adopted a harsher and more threatening tone towards the West. Beijing recently sent a warning to US President Barack Obama not to receive the Dalai Lama, or else. It has also threatened sanctions against countries that sell weaponry to Taiwan.

China's new assertiveness reflects its growing influence on the world stage, says RNW's senior foreign affairs commentator Bernard Hammelburg, and it's a signal we can ill afford to ignore.
