Dutch researchers have developed a simple blood test to distinguish the DNA of a fetus from that of its mother. It could be used to diagnose one of the most prevalent genetic aberrations: Down's Syndrome.
The safe new test is reliable in 98% of cases. Researchers believe they'll achieve 100% accuracy by the end of the year, though they say it will take another two to three years before the test is introduced in hospitals. The screening will cost approximately 500 euros and can be done between the 10th and the 14th week of the pregnancy.

Its World DS day, supporting positive awareness. Such a tragety that I have to read about a diagnostic test to weed out and kill (over 90% of diagnoses are aborted) people because they are differnces and deviations from some silly ideal.
My daughter was a surprise diagnosis at birth....she has added so much richness to my life. Yet researchers and doctors who have no connection to our wonderful community continue to waste prescious resources investigating ways to eliminate people like my daughter
More than deserving to live.....hate seeing her life marginalized by ignorant people.
I have had down's syndrome children as my dental patients. They are very special children and are very affectionate. They have lots of medical problems that shorten their life, which is very traumatic for the family. However, aborting them and taking away their right to be born, seems a bit too far. It is an ethical dilemma for the doctor and parents.
Great!
