A new Dutch reality TV show has allegedly violated the confidentiality of patients at the VU Medical Center in Amsterdam. The programme, made by Eyeworks, a TV production house founded in the Netherlands, filmed patients at the hospital's emergency room non-stop over a two-week period.
All patients were supposed to have been informed that they would be filmed from the moment they arrived until being discharged. In at least one case this did not happen. The hospital has since apologised to the patient involved and her father, but they have decided to file a complaint.
The news has caused a controversy in the Netherlands. The Dutch Health Care Inspectorate has asked the medical centre for an explanation.
The commercial TV station, RTL, had scheduled the show '24 hours: between life and death' from March 7th, but decided to broadcast the first part on February 23rd 'so that people can judge for themselves'.
