Attack increases Queen Beatrix's popularity

Published on : 3 June 2009 - 11:38am | By Robert Chesal
More about:
The popularity of Queen Beatrix has grown since the attack on Queen's Day. However, this has not translated into more support for the monarchy. Maintaining a royal household costs a lot of money. These costs are a central factor in the latest episode of Beatrix Street.

Pollster Maurice de Hond conducted a survey on the popularity of the royal family ten days after the failed attempt by Karst T to ram his car into a bus carrying members of the royal family. Sympathy for Queen Beatrix grew strongly, rising from 72 percent before the attack to 81 percent afterwards. The percentage of those who found the Queen closer to the people rose from 30 to 44 percent.

Several days after the poll, figures were released concerning the total costs of maintaining the monarchy. Some 119 million euros were spent on the royal household in 2008. We confronted residents of the Beatrix Street in Zutphen with these figures and asked them if they thought the money was well spent.
