Students in Bosnia, like elsewhere, want to watch unusual films from time to time. But few have been available in the country since the war of the mid-1990s. Two women from Amsterdam set up a cinema this past summer: the Kriterion-Sarajevo, based on a cinema with the same name in the Dutch capital.
The Kriterion was created in June 1945, shortly after the end of World War II, by young members of a resistance group in Amsterdam. The idea was that students could work and not have to depend on their parents or the government. The cinema has played an important role in the life of Amsterdam students ever since.
Many individuals have sponsored a seat in the Sarajevo cinema. The cinema's success has inspired young people in the rest of the Balkans to open their own Kriterion.
