Amsterdam residents in two minds about tourists

Published on : 2 February 2012 - 3:44pm | By Marijke van den Berg (EénVandaag screenshot)
More about:

Amsterdammers are facing a tough choice. People living in the city centre feel that their neighbourhood is being overrun by tourists, and want the local council to take measures to curb the unpleasant side effects.

But the city council points out that tourists are a cornerstone of the city's economy. So, instead of reducing the number of tourists, attempts are being made to bring in a different kind of tourist - quieter people with more cash.

The locals remain sceptical.

I think it's just a small proportion of people complaining, there are countries who envy the amount of tourists.
In Australia we are faced with a diminishing tourist trade as a result of the strong Aussie dollar hence job losses in the tourist industry, Amsterdam should consider themselves lucky! and it shows that there are still folks who are willing to spend money in 'Mokum'.
Yes, the liberal reputation is well known, perhaps a bit seedy , but also curious.

Another well shot video! Please don't blame the tourists for overcrowded trams/buses - take a look at the disruption that the new Metro lines have caused. As we are told, the Netherlands looks to replace its low-end tourists with high-end tourists. Good luck with that, but we must also upgrade our total offering for the high-end tourists we seek. They will not spend more money just to be treated as they have been.

Sorry but Amsterdam is known for sex, drugs and prostitution. The Dutch so want to show how liberal they are so now I guess they have to put up with the lowlife tourist that go there for a cheap thrill.

I honestly don't know why Amsterdammers are complaining. The city has thrived for years off the tourism industry. But don't worry guys, once the ban to sell pot to tourists kicks in, I'm sure you will get what you wish for. But then don't complain you don't have any more money......
