Amsterdam - Gay Capital no more

Published on : 7 February 2011 - 5:42pm | By Thijs Westerbeek van Eerten (screenshot: RNW)
More about:

Amsterdam's 'Gay Capital' status is already ancient history. In recent years the city has lost much of its 'pink' allure. Berlin, Barcelona and Paris now have much more to offer in terms of gay nightlife, entertainment and events.

Apart from this international competition, Amsterdam has also experienced an upsurge in anti-gay and lesbian violence. And many famous gay bars, cafés and clubs have closed their doors. Now the local Labour Party and pro-market VVD party want to see the Dutch capital retake its position as Gay Capital of Europe.

VVD councillor Frank van Dalen says Amsterdam's fading allure is not just a shame for gay men and lesbians, it's hurting the city's economy. Gay tourists often spend comparatively large amounts of money. There's work to be done if Amsterdam is to win back its crown.

amsterdam has to regain gay capital title of the world again #12

Anonymous 9 February 2011 - 12:03am / Netherlands

I originally took part in this news report and was interviewed along with several other people in Bar Prik about Amsterdam as a gay capital. The remarks from myself and others were very positive.

Yes Amsterdam has recently seen a lot of regular gay bars closing since the death of Sjoerd Koistra but there are still many other independent gay bars to visit. In addition, there is a varied program of gay circuits parties to attend. Creative, individual and dynamic in their existence. It just takes a little more effort to find out where these events are.

It is such a shame that in these days in order to sell a news story news channels, including RNW have to concentrate on the negative side of life. Report what was said and stopping editing a report so much so suit your own views.

A total biased news article. Not worthy of wrapping my chips in!!!

Sorry Anonymous..the RNW is right. As a gay man visiting Amsterdam for at least 15 years the drop for Amsterdam as a city gay people would want to visit has gone down dramatically. You may not know it at Bar Prik as the crowd is a conservative local cocktail crowd... The only gay leather hotel, the back tulip has closed due to lack of bookings...along with many others...heard the bear hotel is to close soon. Lets face it, your weather sucks, your restaurants suck...the coffee shops are under attack, the buses and trams are out to kill you and the center has looked like a war zone for many many years. You don't know if you will be accosted on the streets. I love Amsterdam very much but I can see that if your coming for a fun gay vacation, you can go elsewhere.
