Air travel - tell us how to fly in comfort

Published on : 9 February 2010 - 4:02pm | By Marijke van den Berg (RNW)
More about:

"Have a pleasant flight"... If only that was true! So many people dread flying these days. Not because they are phobic, but because of the discomfort, bad food or total lack of sustenance, poor service and noisy, irritating or downright aggressive fellow passengers.

But there is an abundance of information out there about how to have a 'pleasant flight'. Unfortunately, not all the advice you find is equally effective. In his latest film Up in the Air, US actor George Clooney gives ten tips for an enjoyable flight.

In the security queue, for example: you should “never get behind old people, their bodies are littered with hidden metal.” Asians, on the other hand, “pack light, travel efficiently and they got a thing for slip-on shoes”.

Tell us how to do it
We want your tips for a great flight. So if you have a good tip, no matter how small, why not post it below in the reactions' section. We would love to hear from you!

We've drawn up our own top five on the basis of a survey of experienced air travellers.

  1. Only bring carry-on luggage. You can stow a lot more in the overhead lockers than you think.
  2. Check in online, and wave cheerfully as you walk past all those people standing at the check-in desk.
  3. A good book is still the best way to kill time during a delay. A portable video player and a pocket PC aren’t half-bad either.
  4. When on a long flight, check as soon as you can to see if there is a row of free seats anywhere on the plane. Ask the flight attendant whether you can lie down there. Success guaranteed!
  5. If you are not in the mood for your fellow passengers’ undoubtedly highly interesting conversations, put on a headset.

always have something like a leather luggage tag to identify each of the bags you bring with you.

Is this for real? Do you people seriously think that people don't know this already?
