AfPak: the war against the Taliban, an analyst's view

Published on : 1 July 2009 - 3:44pm | By RNW Radio Netherlands Worldwide
More about:

Pakistan is in the middle of a huge offensive against Taliban fighters in the border area with Afghanistan. United States drones are supporting the operation with reconnaissance and bombing flights. The military assumption is that the war in neighbouring Afghanistan will remain unwinnable as long as the Taliban in Pakistan have not been beaten, or at least reined in.

Afghanistan and Pakistan have become one and the same issue - in international political jargon already known by its acronym AfPak. RNW spoke to senior foreign affairs analyst Bernard Hammelburg.

USA need to win this war for their prestige. Military and weapon contractors will milk this to the end. Obama can't withdraw as he compaigned for this war. India and Israel and their lobbies will continue to support the war as it serves their interests. I don't see a way out of it. Infact Indian and Israeli intelligence agencies are very much involved in this and in the near future they will supply Taliban with a dirty bomb and plan to attack nuclear facilities inside Pakistan, and you will see lot of uproar about the Pakistani Nuclear Weapons. USA, India, Israel, NATO with the help of UN will put pressure on Pakistan to get rid of it's nuclear weapons or face worst sanctions ever possible. Thus further destabilizing Pakistan to the brink of collapse giving birth to millions of radicals, militants, fundamentalists and Taliban as Pakistan is very populous country. In such a scenario any mis calculation can be very costly as loose nuclear weapons is the last thing the world wants.

What rubbish are you talking cheema? What does Israel and India have to do with it? It is purely US and Pakistan and Nato Afghaanistan now.Why are you blaming others for the ills Pakistan has in its kitty since its inception? This attitude isn't going to help Pakistan.Prez Zardari has admitted that Taliban are their creation for using against others as a policy matter. At least be honest about it!
