Adding a splash of Brazillian colour to Four Day Marches

Published on : 24 July 2009 - 10:18am | By RNW Radio Netherlands Worldwide
More about:

Frank de Meijer and his family have come over to the Netherlands for the Nijmegen International Four-Day Marches. He was born and bred in the province of Brabant, but has lived in Sao Paulo for 11 years. Dressed in the colours of Brazil, he has been walking in and around Nijmegen this week. With canary yellow shirts and Brazilian flags on their rucksacks, the family stands out amongst the crowd of walkers.

The 93th edition of the annual Four-Day Marches started last Tuesday. With 40,000 walkers it is the largest walking event in the world and every year it attracts people from all over the world who want to take part.

On Tuesday Frank and two of his friends got up early in order to depart from the centre of Nijmegen at four am. It is the fifth time Frank has taken part and the third time he has specially come over from Sao Paulo for it. Frank wants more of a challenge, so has opted for the longest and hardest distance: 50 kilometres.

Radio Netherlands Worldwide followed Frank on the first day of the Four-Day Marches.
