HEAR THE WORLD this week features Zabit Nabizade from Azerbaijan, performing in the ancient magham tradition, which combines Turkish and Persian music and poetry. His spiritual songs, which express love for the divine, were performed at the Tropical Theatre in 2010.
The next concert is by Mariem Hassan from the Western Sahara. Her powerful songs raise the issues of the Sahrawi people of the Azawan desert. Since Morocco took control over part of the region, her people have faced discrimination, persecution and injustice. Many have been forced into refugee camps. Her music mixes protest songs with intimacy and mesmerising poetry.
The Dutch world music delight comes from two Dutch musicians who became so inspired during thier travels in India that they specialised in the Northern Indian raga tradition at Rotterdam conservatorium. Violinist Lenneke van Staalen and tabla player Heiko Dijker Have been playing raga for many years, but only brought out their debut album Footprints in the autumn of 2010.
The show ends with great sounds by one of Brazils best guitarists Marco Pereira, performing his Musica Popular Brasileira in concert in Amsterdam.
