Air passengers across the globe experienced stepped up security today in response to a failed terrorist attack on Christmas day. As police continue to interrogate the Nigerian man who attempted to blow up a plane from Amsterdam to Detroit in the US, questions are being raised about where he was radicalised. There is growing concern about the rise of Al Qaeda-inspired groups in West Africa. Listen to an interview with counter-terrorism expert Professor Paul Rogers.
Dreams for a new millennium
It’s ten years since the dawn of the new millennium. All around the world, many of us were full of expectations, hopes and dreams. This week we'll be broadcasting a series of reports asking what's become of some of those dreams, as the first decade of the new millennium draws to a close. Dutch queen under fire
The Dutch queen is under fire for her comments about the internet. In her annual Christmas Day speech, Queen Beatrix said the world needed more togetherness, and that social networking sites like Facebook are not the answer. Although these communication tools seem to bring people closer together, she said: "people remain at a safe distance, hiding behind their computer screens."
