Earth Beat - Vegetarian Thursday in Belgium

On air: 2 June 2009 22:00 (Photo: Flickr/Axelsrose)

More about:

11 June 2009 - Belgium is traditionally known for its hearty, and some might say heart attack inducing, cuisine. But for one day a week, the citizens of one town are being encouraged to ignore the steak and look kindly on lentils, as Ghent introduces Vegetarian Thursday.

Host Marnie Chesterton takes a trip to this European veggie hotspot, to see how the idea is catching on. Also on the show, a decade ago, a disease swept the Samoan islands, virtually obliterating its core crop, taro. What lesson have been learnt?

Martin Palmer from the Alliance of Religions and Conservation explains what place religion has in saving the environment and Professor Mike Hulme suggests why everyone gets so hot and bothered about the issue of  climate change.

In India where for the Brahmins the Highest Caste the eating of beef is taboo for they believe that the world is ruled by karma and in one quip the entire philosophy, "THE COW'S WHO'S THROAT YOU CUT TODAY SHALL CUT YOUR THROAT TOMORROW." The meat packing industry people are the most arrogant polluters in the world and it will one day catch up with all those who partake of flesh eating.
