Newsline - Taliban leader dead?

On air: 4 August 2009 22:00

More about:

Newsline 7 August: There are growing indications that Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud has been killed in Pakistan; suddenly the US seems to be warming to the ICC, and we visit Johannesburg in our summer Hotspots series.

Taliban leader dead?
Reports are pouring in that Pakistan's most wanted man, Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud, has been killed by a US missile. He is believed to have died when a drone targeted the home of a relative. Senior Pakistani and US officials say there's reason to believe he's dead but because of the remoteness of the location there is not yet conclusive evidence. Listen to interview with Rahul Bedi.

US warms to ICC
The Obama administration has made a strong declaration of support for the International Criminal Court. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton expressed regret that America was not part of the court - but Washington is still a long way from signing up to the ICC. Read full article on this topic by International Justice Editor Hermione Gee. Listen to ineterview with Michael Barnett.

Hotspot Johannesburg
We drop by a popular bar in the South African city Johannesburg where different cultures and nationalities meet, attracted by old-school music and a buzzy vibe. Listen to a report by Elles van Gelder.
