Newsline - South Africans get the party started

On air: 4 December 2009 15:20

More about:

Newsline 4 December 2009: South Africans are getting ready for their World Cup party, NATO pledges more troops to Afghanistan but not every member wants to contribute and can family planning actually save the planet?

Listen to today's programme:

NATO's search for extra Afghanistan troops continues

NATO secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said today 25 countries have agreed to send 7,000 soldiers to Afghanistan, adding to the 30,000 already promised by the US. But there's also growing doubt over whether this fresh surge will actually succeed.

Listen to our Brussels correspondent Vanessa Mock here. For more angles on this story, follow our Afghanistan correspondent Bette Dam on Twitter here.

Saving the planet.... by better family planning?

It may sound far-fetched, but the UK-based website www.popoffsets.com says it's realistic and achievable. How? Find out by listening to this report or by reading this article.

What do you think - should we limit our families to save the planet? Let us know at , or leave a message on the official Newsline Facebook Fan Page.

South Africans get ready for their biggest party in history

Celebrations for next year's South Africa World Cup kicked off today with the draw which will decide which teams play each other next June and July. Most South Africans are proud to host this event, as our correspondent Paul Anstiss found out in the streets of Cape Town, one of the World Cup host cities where the draw took place.

Listen to reactions from people in Cape Town here, to an interview with Paul here or read his article (includes photos).
