HEAR THE WORLD "Wonderful grooves by singer Ivan Lins, one of Brazil’s popular music greats. We’ll be playing more from his 2009 concert at the World Forum in The Hague later.
This is Hear the World, Radio Netherlands’ music programme with highlights from Dutch world music venues. I am Dheera Sujan.
We begin today’s programme with music from the Greek Sokratis Sinopoulos and his ensemble. Sinopoulos plays the lyre, a small three-stringed viol. His music is influenced by classical, jazz, Byzantine, Turkish and Greek traditions. He is particularly inspired by Greek ‘urban blues’, known as the rembetika. Sokratis Sinopoulos performed at Amsterdam’s Tropical Theatre in the autumn of 2010. Listen to how he combines Greek traditions with new compositions and improvisations in the following two numbers: Raiko and Prosfygas."
