Newsline 11 March 2010: Myanmar changes its election law to target Aung San Suu Kyi, a UN organization alleges that World Food Programme aid to Somalia is being diverted, and was there funny business at the polls in the Netherlands’ local elections?

Listen to the latest edition of Newsline

Myanmar targets Suu Kyi with new election law
New election laws imposed by Myanmar's military regime ban political prisoners – including opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi – from standing for office. Parties which allow prisoners to be members can be dissolved – meaning Ms Suu Kyi's NLD must either expel her or face extinction. Benjamin Zawacki of Amnesty International, told Newsline’s Louise Dunne that the new regulations are even more draconian than the regime’s critics had feared.

WFP denies Somali food aid goes astray

A critical report by UN organisation, the Monitoring Group on Somalia, says most of the UN World Food Programme food aid to Somalia is falling into the hands of people who don't deserve it.
Greg Barrow of the World Food Programme told Newsline’s Johan van Slooten the allegations are untrue.

Dutch democracy on the ropes?
There have been allegations of dubious practices at the polls at last week’s local elections in the Netherlands. Controversy was so rife in the second-largest Dutch city Rotterdam that a re-count of the vote is taking place. Political editor John Tyler reports.
