Hear the World - Multicultural Roots and Branches

On air: 21 January 2011 8:00 - 22 April 2011 8:00 (Dina Medina)

More about:

HEAR THE WORLD  "Multicultural roots and branches: Tarhana (Turkey/Netherlands) and Ghalia Benali (Belgium/Tunisia); Nataša Mirkovic (Bosnia-Herzegovina) and Matthias Loibner (Austria); Dina Medina (Netherlands/Cape Verde)

In this programme there is a lot of diversity with three exciting singers from widely divergent musical traditions.

The programme begins with the Belgian-Tunisian singer Ghalia Benali. Her musical roots lie in the North African Arab tradition. In addition, influences from India, Spain, the Balkans and Brazil can be heard in her work. She performs with Tarhana, a cross-over group which puts the accent on Turkish music, but also uses music now and then from the Balkans and North Africa, as well as Sufi music, jazz, ambient and trance.

The second singer is Nataša Mirkovic, who lives in Austria. Originally she comes from Bosnia-Herzegovina. Together with Austrian musician Matthias Loibner, who accompanies her on the hurdy-gurdy, she makes the subtle connection between the Alps and the Balkans. This results in a refreshingly and surprisingly arranged repertoire from the Balkan region.

The third singer is Dutch singer Dina Medina. Her musical roots lie in Cape Verde and this can be heard in the wonderful swaying rhythms of the morna, Cape Verde’s melancholy folk music. This recording comes from her concert at the 2008 Dutch Blend Meeting in Rotterdam."

Hear the World is hosted by Dheera Sujan.
