Siegfried Idyll
Wagner composed the Siegfried Idyll as a birthday present to his second wife, Cosima, after the birth of their son Siegfried in 1869. It was first performed on the morning of Cosima's birthday by a small ensemble on the stairs of their villa at Tribschen, Switzerland. Today, it is often performed in Wagner's full orchestral version.
LIVE AT THE CONCERTGEBOUW “…this week in Live at the Concertgebouw: Gustav Mahler’s Fifth Symphony and Richard Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll - two thrilling late romantic masterpieces performed by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The conductor is one of the orchestra’s most exciting guest conductors, the flamboyant Italian maestro Daniele Gatti. I vividly remember his debut in Amsterdam in 2004 when he conducted Strauss and Wagner. The sold out concerts left an indelible impression…
He has been back virtually every season since that memorable week both here at the Concertgebouw and on tour with the RCO. He has established himself as a valuable asset for the continuation of the orchestra’s world fame…..” [RNW-host Hans Haffmans]

I love classical music and to receive it from Europe is exciting.
This was just a wonderful performance of the Mahler 5th and the Sigrid Idyll. I so enjoy when the Concertgebouw comes to my city, Washington, DC, to perform at Kennedy Center as it always is such a treat.
