This is the unusual story of Pavel Salz, a Czech émigré who unexpectedly heard that the old family home in the Bohemian mountains still existed. He and his wife decided to visit and made some remarkable discoveries.
The Salz family had lived in the region since the end of the 17th century. The house originally belonged to his great-grandparents in the mid-1800’s. His grandfather moved to Prague where he and his wife owned a small shop. But when the German’s occupied Prague before the Second World War, they moved back to the family home.
Documents and photographs Pavel Salz found under the floorboards when he visited the house with his Dutch wife Ans brought a painful family past back to life.
The House was produced by Michele Ernsting. The program was originally broadcast in December 2001 as part of the series Sound Fountain.
