Newsline - Flash flooding in Turkey leaves dozens dead

On air: 5 September 2009 22:00

More about:

On Newsline (9 September): New and stricter policies on soft drugs don't mean an end to Dutch tolerance on drugs; Southern African countries call for a lifting of the sanctions against Zimbabwe, and Jose Manuel Barosso is trying desperately to be re-elected as the head of the influential European Commission.

Flash flooding in Turkey leaves dozens dead
Turkey experiences its worst weather for 80 years as rain continues to pelt the country. Dozens of people die in the largest city, Istanbul, and the death toll is expected to rise in coming days.

African countries want end to Zimbabwe sanctions
Southern African leaders have called for the removal of international sanctions on Zimbabwe following a two-day meeting in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We ask whether Robert Mugabe is being rewarded while the power-sharing agreement is sidelined.

The most powerful man in Europe?
Jose Manuel Barosso, head of the European Commission and sometimes called 'the most powerful man in Europe', is seeking a second term. But will he succeed now that social democrats, liberals and greens in the new European Parliament have their doubts. We follow Mr Barosso on his campaign trail.

No closing time for Dutch coffee shops yet
Dutch tolerance of the selling of drugs in coffee shops won't end because of the new policy announced by the Dutch cabinet. 'Coffeeshops' will be allowed to stay in business, but measures have to be taken to stem the flow of tourists. Will this new policy work, or is it just a flawed compromise?
