European Jazz Stage - Week 21.
That’s the great Phil Woods on alto sax with the Benny Golson classic Along Came Betty, and here’s the kicker: you’ve just tuned in to the 1977 North Sea Jazz Festival. That’s where we recorded Woods and his wonderful band.
The good news is: today we’re going to select highlights from three decades of North Sea Jazz recordings... we will listen to an adventurous Betty Carter from back in 1977, the Harper Brothers at their peak in 1989, Dutch pianist Rob Madna will bring along some of his best young protégés from the late nineties… and then finally the great Toots Thielemans and Kenny Werner will finish up with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw in 2001. It’s a special show today. More than 30 years of shifting tides at the North Sea Jazz Festival.. So stay with us!
Welcome, from the Netherlands, to great jazz performances from clubs, festivals and concert halls across Europe -- I’m Daniel Frankl and this is European Jazz Stage.
